On September 23, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended commemorative activities for the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Geneva Conventions at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In his speech, Wang Yi told three humanitarian stories.
Wang Yi said, humanity is embedded in the genes of humankind and requires the support of justice and courage. During the Second World War, a German named John Rabe called for and brought about the establishment of a Nanjing Safety Zone, sheltering over 200,000 Chinese people. Hence, he was regarded as "Oskar Schindler of China". He wrote The Good Man of Nanking: The Diaries of John Rabe, a book over 2,400 pages long, detailing the truth of history. It is the upright and brave people like him that bring the hope of rebirth to the people in desperation.
Wang Yi said, mutual care is the cornerstone of human survival and transcends national borders, races and beliefs. Two years ago, the Red Cross Society of China launched a humanitarian aid program of "Angels Tour, which has brought over 120 Afghan children with congenital heart diseases to normal life. Sophia, one of the diseased children, was found to have very rare "panda blood". A Uyghur couple of China volunteered to donate blood to ensure a successful operation on her. This little girl is now known as "the child of China and Afghanistan". It is this great love beyond national boundaries that gives war-tormented children an opportunity to meet the future of the country's recovery to peace.
Wang Yi said, dedication is a noble sentiment of mankind and yet needs to be embodied and sublimated in practice. A Chinese volunteer who is staying at a refugee camp in the small town of Kfifan, Lebanon, teaches Syrian children percussion instruments, painting and calligraphy. He said, "Even when every kilometer is covered by a grave amount of sorrow, children are entitled to enjoy happiness, and where there is smile, there is hope. Even if I can only make a little contribution, I would not leave." This is a Chinese college student who was born after 1995, one representative of tens of millions of volunteers working all around the world. It is these ordinary people, with their selfless actions, that appease trauma and grief and inspire confidence and expectation.
